GlobalSight 8.1.1 Now Available

We are happy to announce the release of version 8.1.1.

This release is a little different than some of the previous, the GlobalSight team, at the start of this release cycle, decided to make a conscious effort to focus on improving test automation. In a product of GlobalSight's size and complexity there's no way to cover everything we need to in every release and testing by hand is not good enough. In the long run, the only way to guarantee a stable product is if we can automate tests.

The team spent significant time and effort on test automation of various kinds, and we're very happy to report that at release time, we now have over 400 automated test cases that we can run against our builds. This is great progress, and we will continue to invest time in further automation over the next few releases to help ensure product stability.

Meanwhile, the team also found time to fix over 20 bugs and implement a number of small enhancements. A full list can be found on the wiki, but here are a few of the highlights:

  • Significant performance improvements to the "My Activities" page. This is the change that will affect users significantly. We isolated and fixed several bottlenecks that were causing the "My Activities" page to scale poorly as the number of jobs in the system increased. The speedup is large, especially when there are many active jobs.
  • Font "translation" for the FrameMaker 9 converter. The FrameMaker 9 converter and preview feature that was introduced in GlobalSight 8.1 had one limitation: since the target file's text used the same fonts as the source file, additional DTP was needed to allow non-Western scripts to display correctly. In GlobalSight 8.1.1, the converter now does this font conversion automatically.
  • Improvements to the terminology system. A lot of behind-the-scenes work was done to clean up the terminology system. The most obvious effect of this is that the terminology search feature is improved.

You can see a full list at the GlobalSight 8.1.1 release page. For more information about using the tool, upcoming release plans, etc., see the GlobalSight wiki page.

If you have questions about particular features, issues, etc., please reach to the GlobalSight team and the community by posting your questions in the www.globalsight.com forum or feel free to contact me directly.

GlobalSight Creates 50% Increase in Demand for TAUS Online Search

Users of the TAUS Data Association (TDA) free online search facility have increased their usage by 50% since the implementation of Welocalize’s GlobalSight in October 2010. This increase in performance is yet another positive step towards industry-wide use of fully compliant open standards as a result of the GlobalSight and TAUS partnership.

TAUS Search enables anyone to find, compare and translate sector specific multilingual terminology online. By simply visiting www.tausdata.org, users can access the vast translation memory database which contains over 3.4 billion words. This initiative is part of TDA’s overall mission to host the world’s translation memories to make translation easier, faster and better for everyone.

In October 2010, TDA integrated Welocalize’s Open-Source Translation Management System, GlobalSight, onto the TAUS data platform to facilitate translation matching on the server. Prior to GlobalSight, the TAUS search was limited to exact translation matches. Users can now enjoy exact and fuzzy matches from all translation data in the TAUS data repository.

“Over the past 4 months, we have seen a significant increase in the number of TAUS searches. Users are obviously enjoying the experience and sourcing higher quality translations as a direct result of GlobalSight,” said Derek Coffey, VP of Technology & Professional Services at Welocalize. “There are over 3.4 billion words going through the TAUS Data platform which demonstrates the incredible scalability and proven capability of GlobalSight. We look forward to continuing our close relationship with the TDA and adding more GlobalSight APIs, features and functionality.”

“Since launching with GlobalSight in October 2010, we saw the number of TAUS searches double and translation professionals all over the world seem delighted with the new, more powerful search facility,” comments Jaap van der Meer, Director of TAUS Data Association. “We believe open platforms benefit everyone in the localization industry and Welocalize is one of the key players in making this happen.”
