GlobalSight release 8.0

Release webinar and Q&A

GlobalSight 8.0 is a new release of the GlobalSight system. It contains the new features, enhancements to existing features and bug fixes listed below.

For instructions on upgrading to the new release, see Upgrading GlobalSight.

New features

  1. Support for Microsoft Office 2010 (DOCX/XLSX/PPTX) and Adobe InDesign CS5 (IDML) file formats. These are pure-Java implementations that do not need external converters to run, unlike previous Office and InDesign support
  2. Support for WorldServer translation kits (.XLZ) and WorldServer XLIFF (.XLF) file formats. These are treated as source files and produce a bilingual target
  3. Support for PO, RESX, and RC file formats
  4. Support for the LISA Term Base eXchange (TBX), a terminology interchange format
  5. Integration to the Asia Online machine translation system
  6. Integration to the Translation Matching feature of the TAUS Data Association
  7. A new storage system for translation memories that offers improved leverage performance and better scalability for large TMs
  8. Support for Windows 7 Office 2003 and Office 2007 converters
  9. Access control groups for TMs

Support for Microsoft Office 2010 and Adobe InDesign CS5 file formats

GlobalSight now supports Microsoft Office 2010 (DOCX/XLSX/PPTX) and Adobe InDesign CS5 (IDML) file formats.

Both are pure-Java implementations that do not need external converters to run, unlike previous Office and InDesign support.

Contact your admin to enable them.

Support for WorldServer translation kits and XLIFF

GlobalSight now supports WorldServer translation kits (.XLZ) and WorldServer XLIFF (.XLF) file formats. Both are treated as source files and produce a bilingual target.

You can export an XLZ file from WorldServer and import it into GlobalSight when creating a job or a project. This allows you to use the building support of GlobalSight for Machine Translation engines, workflows, Online Editor and so on.

Once the GlobalSight job is complete, GlobalSight exports it in XLZ format - the same file format in which it is imported into GlobalSight.

You can also export from WorldServer in XLIFF format and import into GlobalSight when creating a job.

Contact your admin to enable them.

Support for PO, RESX, and RC file formats

GlobalSight now supports PO (Portable Object), RESX (Resource file for .NET applications) and RC (Resource Compiler) file formats.

Contact your admin to enable them.

Support for the LISA TBX

GlobalSight now supports the LISA Term Base eXchange (TBX), a terminology interchange format.

Contact your admin to enable it.

Integration to the Asia Online MT system

GlobalSight can now be integrated to Asia Online's Machine Translation system.

Contact your admin to enable it.

Integration to TDA Translation Matching

GlobalSight can now be integrated to TAUS Data Association (TDA) Translation Matching.

This feature allows association members to leverage their content against the TDA's archive of shared translation memory. TDA membership is required to use this feature. For more information, see the Taus Data Association.

GlobalSight supports TDA Translation Matching as part of the leveraging step. It is configured in a similar way to Machine Translation providers.

TM3: a new storage system for TMs

TM3 is a new TM storage engine in GlobalSight that provides better leverage performance and scalability. TM3 is not yet enabled by default, and must be enabled on a per-company basis.

Contact your admin to enable TM3 when creating the company.

Support for Windows 7 Office 2003 and Office 2007 converters

The MS Office converters for 2003 and 2007 now run as a standalone desktop application. You can run it on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 operating systems.

Contact your admin to enable them.

Access control groups for TMs and terminology

Administrators can now restrict access to TMs and termbases to particular users. Access is configured on TM or TB basis.

Restricting access to a TM affects:

  • The TMs that are listed in TM Management
  • The TMs that are displayed when creating or editing a Translation Memory Profile
  • The TMs that are available for searching in the Corpus Browser

Restricting access to a termbase affects:

  • The Terminology page
  • The termbases that are available when creating or editing a project
  • The termbases that are available in Search Terms
